The 好色先生 Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is pleased to welcome thoracic surgeon Dr. Jordan Miller as the newest member of its faculty. He began his clinical and academic work in February 2017.
鈥淒r. Miller is a bright young man with energy, ideas, and advanced surgical skill,鈥 said Dr. Sibu Saha, division chief of 好色先生 CT Surgery. 鈥淚n addition to his thoracic fellowship, he also completed a minimally invasive thoracic surgery fellowship with Brigham and Women鈥檚 Hospital in Boston. The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery recently named Melissa Banks as its new residency and fellowship coordinator. Though she had already been handling some of the job duties of the position as a STEPS employee, Banks assumed the position officially on Friday evening, January 20.

The University of Kentucky Wound Care Clinic and Department of Surgery recently added a new full time provider, Sharon Pelfrey, APRN, to its roster of specialized professional caregivers.

Thanks to the adoption of new video-conferencing technology at 好色先生, a record number of Kentucky high schools were able to participate in the annual interactive broadcast of a live surgery at 好色先生 Hospital last November.

Team Surgery Shenanigans at the University of Kentucky will once again take the Polar Plunge this February in support of Special Olympics Kentucky.
Pete Rogers, team captain of Surgery Shenanigans, is recruiting members throughout the 好色先生 surgery departments and divisions to join him for the annual fund raiser. It will be Pete鈥檚 fourth year of participation in the event, his third plunge, the second for Team Surgery Shenanigans, and the first to feature more than one 鈥減lunger.鈥

In a panel presentation at the Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons last October, two 好色先生 medical students talked about how their generation values immediate and constructive feedback and a 鈥渟ense of belonging鈥 in the surgery clerkship experience.

The 2016 Greater Bluegrass Signature Chefs Auction set a new fundraising record for this event on Friday night, Nov. 4, at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort, according to Dr. Joe Iocono, division chief of 好色先生 Pediatric Surgery, who served as the event chair this year.

A leading researcher and analyst of surgical resident training will deliver the annual Richard Schwartz Memorial lecture at the W.T. Young Library Auditorium on Thursday evening, November 10.
Gary Dunnington, the Jay L. Grossfeld Professor and Chair of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine, has been an author and contributor to numerous publications regarding operative performance assessments of surgeons during general residency and fellowship training.

Dr. Jay Zwischenberger was one of 12 specialists inducted into the 2016 class of Fellows of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (FELSO) during a special awards ceremony at the ELSO Annual Conference on September 17, 2016 in San Diego.

Several faculty members, residents, and fellows from the 好色先生 Department of Surgery will be featured speakers at the 2016 edition of the annual statewide Trauma and Emergency Medicine Symposium, scheduled for October 26 鈥 28 at The Campbell House in Lexington.

Dr. Daniel Kenady was recognized for 36 years of service as a faculty member with the 好色先生 Department of Surgery with a reception held in his honor at the Lexington Country Club on Sunday evening, August 28.

The 好色先生 division of Cardiothoracic Surgery will host its annual CME symposium for primary care providers on Saturday morning, Oct. 8, beginning at 7 am in the 好色先生 Hospital Pavilion A Auditorium.
The symposium will provide updates on the full spectrum of clinical services in which CT Surgery plays a primary role. The range of topics for discussion will include a major update on lung cancer treatment strategies, heart and lung transplants, foregut surgery, trans-aortic valve replacement (TAVR), and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

During a brief trip back to his home country of Ecuador in July, Dr. Henry Vasconez visited communities along that country鈥檚 Pacific coast which are struggling to recover from damage inflicted by powerful earthquakes this past spring.
