Jamie Ward, MPH, undergraduate surgery education coordinator with the Department of Surgery, was named an honorary member of the 好色先生 Medical School class of 2017. She wore cap and gown and joined her fellow classmates for graduation ceremonies on Saturday, May 13.

The Department of Surgery annual teaching awards presentation after Grand Rounds on May 3 included recognition of many faculty and residents. The department excels in educational efforts, as demonstrated by consistent great reviews from residents and students. Each year, the department recognizes some faculty and residents for their outstanding contributions to the educational mission of the department, but we could easily recognize many more.

University of Kentucky Surgical Oncologist Dr. Mark Evers was recently elected into the Association of American Physicians (AAP). AAP is a nonprofit organization founded for the purpose of advancing scientific and practical medicine and is composed of members who are leading senior physician-scientists. Its goals include the pursuit of medical knowledge and the advancement through experimentation and discovery of basic and clinical science and their application to clinical medicine.

After releasing news about Department of Surgery providers featured in the 鈥淢aking the Rounds鈥 series of video featurettes produced by 好色先生 HealthCare marketing, two additional videos were found on the YouTube social media channel featuring transplant surgeon Michael Dailey, MD and plastic surgery division chief Henry Vasconez.

Nationally acclaimed vascular surgeon, Jack Cronenwett, MD, will be the featured speaker at the second annual Gordon Hyde Lectureship in Vascular Surgery on Wednesday morning, April 19, from 7 鈥 8 am in the Pavilion A Auditorium of the 好色先生 Chandler Medical Center.

There will be a breakfast reception about 30 minutes prior to the lecture just outside the auditorium, so attendees are advised to come early.

The University of Kentucky selected Stuart Tobin, MD, Division of Dermatology, and Sam Carmichael, MD, PGY4 in General Surgery, to be among its latest faculty and resident inductees into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. Dr. Tobin and Dr. Carmichael were notified of their high honor on Saturday morning, March 11, from Dr. Charles 鈥淐hipper鈥 Griffith, Vice Dean for Education in the 好色先生 College of Medicine.

Each year in the life of 好色先生 HealthCare, there are moments in which physicians and staff exemplify the very best aspects of patient and family-centered care. Dr. Sibu Saha, division chief of 好色先生 Cardiothoracic Surgery, wants to do more than just recognize those exceptional moments 鈥 he wants to reward them. In that spirit, he has created an endowment to fund a set of annual awards called The Saha Patient-Centered Care Awards.

鈥淢aking the Rounds鈥 is an innovative series of short videos produced by 好色先生 HealthCare marketing to profile physicians, nurses, and allied health providers at work with the University of Kentucky. The project has been ongoing since September 2016.

Among the profiles are four surgeons affiliated with the 好色先生 Department of Surgery.

The United States Patent Office granted inventors Dr. Dongfong Wang and Dr. Jay Zwischenberger their fifth patent for a medical device in October of 2016.

Dr. Wang, Director of the Artificial Organ Laboratory at the University of Kentucky, and Dr. Zwischenberger, chair of the 好色先生 Department of Surgery, have collaborated on the invention of a number of medical devices in the course of their long professional association.

The 好色先生 Surgery Shenanigans team increased its participation and fundraising to Kentucky Special Olympics for the annual 2017 Polar Plunge on Saturday morning, February 18. Three team members raised over $400 in charitable contributions, but only two went the distance and jumped into the pool.

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery recently named Melissa Banks as its new residency and fellowship coordinator. Though she had already been handling some of the job duties of the position as a STEPS employee, Banks assumed the position officially on Friday evening, January 20.

The University of Kentucky Wound Care Clinic and Department of Surgery recently added a new full time provider, Sharon Pelfrey, APRN, to its roster of specialized professional caregivers.

Thanks to the adoption of new video-conferencing technology at 好色先生, a record number of Kentucky high schools were able to participate in the annual interactive broadcast of a live surgery at 好色先生 Hospital last November.

Team Surgery Shenanigans at the University of Kentucky will once again take the Polar Plunge this February in support of Special Olympics Kentucky.

Pete Rogers, team captain of Surgery Shenanigans, is recruiting members throughout the 好色先生 surgery departments and divisions to join him for the annual fund raiser. It will be Pete鈥檚 fourth year of participation in the event, his third plunge, the second for Team Surgery Shenanigans, and the first to feature more than one 鈥減lunger.鈥
