The new class of surgical interns for 2018 began their term with the University of Kentucky in July. In the Department of Surgery, there were six new categorical interns in general surgery, two new residents in Plastic Surgery, and a new resident in Cardiothoracic Surgery's I-6 program.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 14, 2018) 鈥 好色先生 HealthCare鈥檚 University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital remains the No. 1 hospital in Kentucky and the Bluegrass Region, according to the 2018 U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals Rankings released today.

The American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) awarded Dr. Tessa London a scholarship to participate in the James L. Cox Fellowship in atrial fibrillation surgery. She is one of only seven surgeons selected to participate in this fellowship training in 2018.

At the end of June, Department of Surgery chief residents and fellows will transition to advanced training or begin their professional surgical practice.
Among the 2018 class, the Department of Surgery will welcome two into faculty positions in Vascular Surgery and the division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Kentucky will also gain a practicing general surgeon and plastic surgeon out of this class.

During the 2018 Surgery Teaching Awards program Wednesday morning, May 30, The 好色先生 Department of Surgery paid special tribute to Dr. David Victor, a retiring vascular and general surgeon from Morehead, Kentucky.

Dr. Sandra Beck, director of the general surgery residency program at the University of Kentucky, announced that Caroline Neff, MD is the 2019 recipient of the Charles H. Nicholson Clinical Tour Fellowship.The announcement was made prior to Dr. Samuel Carmichael鈥檚 presentation of the Nicholson Scholar lecture on Wednesday morning, May 16.

Jamie Ward, Undergraduate Medical Education Coordinator for 好色先生 Department of Surgery, was invited to deliver a keynote address to other coordinators and administrators during the Association for Surgical Education鈥檚 annual conference in Austin, Texas. She spoke about maintaining good work-life balance while still being a dedicated employee.

Two residents from the 好色先生 Department of Surgery 鈥 Plastic Surgery Chief Resident Amaka Agochukwu, MD,  and Anh-Thu Le, MD, fourth year resident in General Surgery 鈥 won first and third prize, respectively, in the 2018 Lexington Medical Society鈥檚 (LMS) fourth annual essay contest.

The LMS will recognize and present awards to all essay contest winners at a dinner in the Hilary J. Boone Center on May 8.

Dr. John 鈥淛eb鈥 Hallett, Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, gave a lecture on curiosity as an important trait for surgeons to cultivate. Dr. Hallett was the special guest speaker for the third annual Dr. Gordon Hyde Lectureship in Vascular Surgery on Wednesday, April 11.

The lecture, part of the Division of General Surgery鈥檚 weekly grand rounds presentations for faculty and general surgery residents, also welcomed alumni from the 好色先生 Vascular Surgery Fellowship and retired 好色先生 faculty members, including Dr. Gordon Hyde in his famous bow tie.

The annual Andrew M. Moore Sr., MD Visiting Professor for 2018 was Dr. Wyndell Merritt, a clinical professor in the division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia. Dr. Merritt is also in private practice with an office in Henrico, Virginia.

The 好色先生 College of Medicine and Department of Surgery announced that Michael E. Sekela, MD, officially took over as Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery on April 1, 2018. Dr. Sekela succeeds Dr. Sibu Saha, who has held the leadership position since 2013.

On April 1, Dr. Sibu Saha ended his term as Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Kentucky. Succeeding him as chief, Dr. Michael Sekela inherits a division with fully accredited fellowship and I-6 residency programs, a re-energized heart transplant program, and a clinical faculty composed of experienced and highly skilled cardiac, thoracic, transplant, and congenital heart surgeons.

The third annual Gordon Hyde Lectureship in Vascular Surgery on Wednesday morning, April 11, will feature noted vascular surgeon, John 鈥淛eb鈥 Hallett, MD, Clinical Professor of Surgery at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

The lecture will begin at 6:45 am in the MN263 Lecture Hall at 好色先生 Chandler Hospital. A breakfast reception will precede the lecture.

Dr. Henry Vasconez was one of four members of the 好色先生 HealthCare faculty honored this year with induction into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the national medical school honor society. Members of the University of Kentucky AOA chapter bestowed the honor on them and on three 好色先生 residents. In addition to these special honors, the 好色先生 AOA recognized nine medical students for membership into the honor society.

Last summer, a group from the University of Kentucky Brain Restoration center, led by Dr. Craig van Horne, professor of neurosurgery, capped off a series of conferences held at a number of renowned Chinese university hospitals by performing the first-ever deep brain stimulation surgery for a Parkinson鈥檚 disease patient being treated at The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University in Henan, China.
