A second year 好色先生 medical student was awarded a scholarship from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons to attend its annual meeting in January. He was one of 30 medical students selected nationally for the honor and the only representative from the University of Kentucky.

Even though there is an increasing shortage of surgeons in several key specialties across the United States, the need for general surgeons in urban and rural areas has reached crisis levels, according to Dr. David Richardson, Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville and a past president of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Richardson delivered this news as the special guest lecturer at the fourth annual Richard W. Schwartz, MD Memorial Lecture and Surgical Symposium on Thursday afternoon, November 16th.

The Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (SESPRS) announced in November the launch of a Visiting Professor Program beginning in 2018. The professors selected to represent SESPRS in the inaugural year of the program are Henry Vasconez, MD, the William S. Farish Endowed Chair of Plastic Surgery at the University of Kentucky and Bruce Shack, MD, Dean of the University of Tennessee鈥檚 College of Medicine in Chattanooga.

Drs. Peter Stafford and Sam Carmichael, 5th year General Surgery residents from the 好色先生 Department of Surgery, made it to the finals of the Surgical Jeopardy competition at the 2017 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons in San Diego at the end of October. The duo defeated the 2016 champions in the opening elimination round, but came just short of winning the whole thing, according to Dr. Cynthia Talley, the team鈥檚 sponsor.

On November 1, the 好色先生 Department of Surgery welcomed Dr. Kant Y.K. Lin as the new chief of the 好色先生 division of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Lin succeeds Dr. Henry Vasconez, who held the chief鈥檚 position for over 22 years. Accepting this new opportunity, Dr. Lin expressed a great deal of optimism about working with faculty and residents and continuing the division鈥檚 progress forward.

David Goldberg, MD, MSCE, a senior fellow from the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics in Philadelphia, will be a special guest lecturer at the 2017 edition of the Bruce Lucas Hepatology and Liver Transplant Symposium on Friday, October 13 at the Kroger Field Recruitment Room. Dr. Goldberg will present findings from studies he has published on two controversial issues in organ transplantation: the impact of the opioid epidemic on organ donations and the risk level posed by hepatitis-C infected organ donors.

Dr. John Draus, pediatric surgeon with the 好色先生 Department of Surgery, accepted appointment earlier this September as the interim Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) for the Kentucky Children鈥檚 Hospital (KCH).

Dr. Draus was asked to step in to the position when the former ACMO, Dr. Scottie Day, agreed to serve as interim chair of the 好色先生 Department of Pediatrics. Day is taking the place of Dr. Carmel Wallace who retired as pediatrics chair this year.

On September 1, the 好色先生 College of Medicine Dean's Office announced eight new administrative appointments, which included Dr. Jing Li, an associate professor in the 好色先生 Department of Surgery.

The appointment of Jing Li, MD, MS, to Associate Director of the Center for Health Services Research and as the new Director of the Office of Value and Innovation in Healthcare Delivery (OVIHD) actually became effective on July 1, 2017.

The University of Kentucky鈥檚 Department of Surgery will be welcoming several new surgeons to its faculty throughout most of the summer and fall of 2017. One of the most recent to join is Dr. Reese W. Randle, a general surgeon with a specialty interest in endocrine surgery. Dr. Randle commenced his practicing on August 1.

Dr. Randle is originally from Houston, Texas. His father works in the oil industry 鈥渓ike nearly everyone else in Houston.鈥 His mother is a long time school teacher.

Dr. Tessa Cartwright, chief fellow in the University of Kentucky鈥檚 division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, took second place honors in the 2017 Research Scholarship Competition sponsored by the International College of Surgeons 鈥 US Section (ICS-US) on Saturday, June 17 in Seattle.

The competition was one of several events held during the ICS-US鈥 Annual Surgical Update over the weekend.

In late July, Dr. Michael J. Cavnar commenced his clinical practice in Surgical Oncology and General Surgery as a faculty member with the University of Kentucky鈥檚 Markey Cancer Center and the Department of Surgery.

The University of Kentucky鈥檚 Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome a new surgeon, Sam Tyagi, MD, to its vascular and endovascular surgery faculty beginning in late July 2017.

Though born in Canada, by the time Sam Tyagi had reached age 7, his family had lived in Stony Brook, New York and Columbia, Missouri before finally settling in Jackson, Mississippi to accommodate his father鈥檚, Suresh Tyagi, Ph.D., various appointments as an NIH-funded researcher and professor in physiology and biophysics .
