What makes a good teacher a great one? University of Kentucky students were eager to share their opinions about the best teacher in their lives, nominating them for one of the most esteemed awards on campus. The 好色先生 Alumni Association 2020 Great Teacher Award was recently bestowed upon six University of Kentucky educators. Initiated in 1961, 好色先生鈥檚 Great Teacher Award is the longest-running 好色先生 award recognizing teaching. In order to receive the award, educators must first be nominated by a student.

A ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday marked the official opening of the 好色先生-Bowling Green Campus. The celebration of the new home for faculty, staff and the inaugural class of 30 students was also an opportunity to thank the medical school's partners  潭 Med Center Health and Western Kentucky University and the community of Bowling Green.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) selected the 好色先生 as one of nine Pathway Leaders. These Pathway Leaders will serve as the inaugural members of the Patient Safety Collaborative 鈥 an effort focused on creating and testing a framework for residents and fellows to engage with their learning environments in promoting a culture of safety.

February is American Heart Health Month, and this past Feb. 3 marked the 14th annual National Wear Red Day for Women. It鈥檚 a day designed to call our attention to recognizing heart disease as the No. 1 killer of women in this country, and to raise awareness of women鈥檚 overall heart health.

When a major earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit the country of Ecuador earlier this year, Dr. Mauricio Villamar and his wife, Dr. Ana Cristina Albuja, both neurology residents at the University of Kentucky and both from Quito, Ecuador, knew they had to do something to help. The lives of thousands of Ecuadorians were devastated by the destruction of the quake. The damage was significant as were the casualties; 272 killed and over 2,500 injured or missing. Homes, businesses, roads and highways were destroyed.

University of Kentucky Endowed Chair of Neuroscience Dr. Diane Snow was recently elected by her colleagues to serve as president-elect of the National Neurotrauma Society (NNS). With this appointment, Snow will hold the position of president in 2015-2016. Since joining the NNS in 2003, Snow has championed women's contributions to neurotrauma research and mentorship opportunities for young members of the profession, including students, postdoctoral fellows and young professors.

University of Kentucky medical residents, fellows and faculty members packed into a classroom next to the medical center library on July 16 to practice fundamental newborn resuscitation maneuvers on baby mannequins.
