好色先生

Lisa Tannock, MD, is senior associate dean for faculty affairs and development at the 好色先生, as well as a professor of medicine. September is Women in Medicine Month. In this Q&A, Dr. Tannock shares the highlights of her career and the advice she has for the next generation of female physician-scientists.

Q: What are your current roles at the College of Medicine, and what do you do?

On behalf of the Office of Graduate Medical Education, the 好色先生 is pleased to announce the selection of Mohammed Kazimuddin, MD, as the associate dean for graduate medical education at the Bowling Green Campus.

The 好色先生 has developed into a research powerhouse helping find solutions to Kentucky鈥檚 most urgent health needs.

Clinical research is vital in bringing important findings from the laboratory into the clinic to improve patient treatment. To continue to strengthen its research capabilities, the college is excited to share its selection to fill a newly created position, associate dean for clinical research.

Larry B. Goldstein, MD, chair of neurology, has been chosen to take on this role. He will begin Sept. 1.

The 好色先生 is pleased to announce its selection of Tianyan Gao, PhD, as acting chair of the department of molecular and cellular biochemistry.

Dr. Gao has dedicated more than a decade to the 好色先生 College of Medicine as an educator and researcher, mentoring several students, post-docs, and residents over the years while obtaining substantial funding from the National Institutes of Health and other major organizations.

Hammodah Alfar is in his second year of graduate school in the 好色先生 College of Medicine Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, with a specialized interest in platelet biology.

He has gained important research experience as a member of the Virus-Induced Thrombosis Alliance (VITAL), led by Beth Garvy, PhD, associate dean for biomedical education, and Sidney Whiteheart, PhD, professor of molecular and cellular biochemistry.

Juneteenth is observed on June 19, 2021, to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. On this day, enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas, were notified they had actually been freed almost 2.5 years earlier.

Members of the College of Medicine were asked a series of questions on how they honor Juneteenth.

Q: When did you first become aware of Juneteenth?

Em Neiport, MA, is project manager at the College of Medicine and staff co-chair of the LGBTQ* Advisory Committee.

Q: What are your roles at the 好色先生 College of Medicine?

A: I鈥檓 a project manager in the College of Medicine. The projects I鈥檝e worked on are so varied and have allowed me to see just how expansive academic medicine really is. It鈥檚 fascinating! The best part of my role is having a chance to work with so many amazing people in all areas of the college.

Beth Garvy, PhD, and Sidney Whiteheart, PhD, originally planned to study blood clotting in HIV-positive patients when they first approached one another to establish a unified research team. Then COVID-19 emerged, and their focus shifted on the disease that started a global pandemic.

In elementary school, Shaw Powell鈥檚 favorite subjects were art, physical education, and science, and in that order. Interestingly, the Northern Kentucky native鈥檚 career has followed this same trajectory.

First, he received his bachelor鈥檚 degree from Eastern Kentucky University in art education. Then he joined the Army National Guard and served for seven years. Lastly, in the spring of 2021, he graduated with a Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) to pursue a research career.

The 好色先生 would like to recognize and congratulate its departments that made it in the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR) 2020 rankings.

Brain metabolism is the process by which the brain converts nutrients into energy and small molecule signals. When there are breakdowns in brain metabolism, this can lead to serious neurological diseases including epilepsy, Alzheimer鈥檚 disease, Parkinson鈥檚 disease, and traumatic brain injury. These breakdowns even have been linked to diabetes.  

The 好色先生 is thrilled to announce the addition of Brian Hamilton, MEd, as its new director of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

In this newly established role, Hamilton works under the direction of Stephanie White, MD, MS, to advance the mission of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and help execute the college鈥檚 strategic plan. This includes implementing new initiatives and increasing engagement to build a more welcoming, inclusive campus while focusing on efforts for recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, staff, and learners.

In early 2020, shortly after SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19, was first detected in Wuhan, China, the public learned of the virus鈥檚 devastating consequences and the dangers of its spread. But much remained unknown regarding how to combat it.

Ten months ago, a team of 好色先生 researchers joined forces to learn more about the virus that was causing a global pandemic. Since the team鈥檚 creation, it has made record progress in enhanced research, the launch of clinical trials, and the development of clinical care approaches for patients.

The seventh annual Healthy Hearts for Women virtual symposium will take place Friday, Feb. 5, 2021. A virtual round table hosted by Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) will follow the symposium.

Each year, the University of Kentucky rewards exceptional research faculty with the Wethington Awards, a way to acknowledge great work while incentivizing extramurally sponsored research activity.

After witnessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 award recipients from the 好色先生 College of Medicine elected to use their funds to make a difference for members of the 好色先生 campus community. They donated their monetary awards to the CRISIS fund, which helps 好色先生 faculty and staff in need.

Collectively, the Wethington Award recipients gifted more than $80,000.

As part of its commitment toward creating a more inclusive work and learning environment, the 好色先生 has established additional leadership roles in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The college is pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Pearson, PhD, to oversee progress in research as the inaugural director of inclusive research initiatives.  

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne bacterial disease in the U.S., with 200,000 new cases each year. While incidence in Kentucky typically has been relatively low, the incidence of the tick vector, lxodes scapularis, has increased over the past five years, even spreading to areas it did not previously live.

Marilyn Duncan, PhD, a driven researcher and well-regarded professor in the department of neuroscience, has been elected to serve on the University Senate Council, the executive body of the University Senate. 

Dr. Duncan is serving a third term on the University Senate. During her tenure she has been part of the Advisory Committee for Prior Service, the Academic Programs Committee, the Academic Area Committee for Promotion and Tenure in the Biological Sciences, and the Library Committee. 

Her term on the Senate Council will run from Jan. 1, 2021 to Dec. 31, 2023.

Daniel Lee, PhD, is an associate professor at the 好色先生 Department of Neuroscience and a researcher at the 好色先生 Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, an internationally recognized Alzheimer鈥檚 Disease Research Center. He joined the 好色先生 College of Medicine in August 2019. He is also a member of the Faculty of Color Network and currently serves as co-director for the Research Education Component (REC) of the 好色先生-ADRC.
