The National Pancreas Foundation has recognized the Markey Cancer Center "one of the best."
Markey Cancer Center has earned the designation of Center of Excellence by the National Pancreas Foundation (NPF).
The designation is awarded to institutions that distinguish themselves through multidisciplinary treatment of pancreatic cancer, treating the 鈥渨hole patient鈥 with a focus on the best possible outcomes and an improved quality of life.
鈥淲e are honored to receive the NPF designation, which highlight鈥檚 Markey鈥檚 commitment to multidisciplinary treatment and providing the best and most innovative patient care possible,鈥 said Joseph Kim, M.D., Markey Cancer Center chief of surgical oncology. 鈥淭he recognition is also a testament to the dedication of our entire pancreatic cancer team in delivering excellent patient care.鈥
An approved NPF Center has to meet the criteria that were developed by a task force made up of invited subject-matter experts and patient advocates. The criteria include having the required expert physician specialties such as gastroenterologists, pancreas surgeons and interventional radiologists, along with more patient-focused programs such as a pain management service, psychosocial support and more.
鈥淲e are thrilled to expand our NPF Centers of Excellence Program to better serve the needs of patients suffering from pancreas disease,鈥 said David Bakelman, CEO of the National Pancreas Foundation.
According to its website, NPF is "the only foundation dedicated to patients who are suffering from all forms of pancreas disease 鈥 pancreatic cancer, acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, pediatric pancreatitis and FCS."
