CHET is excited to share that the Substance Use Priority Research Area (SUPRA) is hosting Dr. Alice Cepeda from the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work on March 18th at 1:00pm.Dr. Cepeda focuses on the social epidemiology of drug use and the related health risk behaviors affecting urban Mexican-origin populations.

The University of Kentucky鈥檚 TRIPPPLe Team Alliance, Center for Health Equity Transformation, and the Center for Advancement of Pharmacy Practice are delighted to host Dr. Geoffrey Curran from the University of Arkansas who will be presenting on 鈥淎n Overview of Hybrid Effectiveness 鈥� Implementation Designs鈥�.

Congratulations to Makenzie Barr, PhD, RDN, LD, Assistant Professor of Dietetics and Human Nutrition in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment for receiving a CHET Just-in-Time award for her project, 鈥淎 Qualitative Community Based Participatory Research Approach to Identifying Community Supported Interventions for Laurel County Kentucky.鈥漈he goal of her project is to identify feasible evidence-based program options of interest to rural Kentuckians that target improvement of health outcomes.Dr.

Anita F. Fernander, Ph.D., ABPBC Diplomate/Fellow, Associate Professor in the Department of Behavioral Science and Chair of CHET's Core Faculty, and Lovoria B. Williams PhD, APRN-BC,FAANP, FAAN, Associate Professor in the College of Nursing and CHET Core Faculty member recently penned an op-ed for the Lexington Herald-Leader on February 11, 2021 entitled "The same Ky. communities most harmed by COVID-19 now face a lack of vaccine access." Annual awards will be made to individuals whose research seeks to understand health disparities and inequities and whose mentorship has contributed to the next generation of health equity scholars.

Kelly Pryor. Dr. Kelly Pryor will give a talk entitled, "The Power and Paradox of Health Equity as an Approach" on December 8th from 11:00am - 12:00pm. Dr. Kelly Pryor operates at the intersection of equity research and practice.

On October 16, 2020, our Director Dr. Nancy Schoenberg shared the following message regarding acknowledging Native Peoples and Place: Dear Colleagues, This week, we have commemorated Indigenous People's Day. As noted by the Smithsonian Institution, 鈥淕enerations of Native people throughout the Western Hemisphere have protested Columbus Day.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 27, 2020) 鈥� The American Academy of Nursing has selected three University of Kentucky College of Nursing faculty members, Camille Burnett, Lovoria Williams and Sharon Lock, to be inducted into its 2020 class of Academy Fellows.   

Congratulations to Dr. Danelle Stevens Watkins, Assistant Vice President for Research in Diversity and Inclusion, Director of Graduate Studies in the 好色先生 College of Education, and CHET Core Faculty member for being chosen to lead the newly established UNITE Research Priority Area.

Racism is a public health threat that undermines health equity. We re-commit to our anti-racist research and training mission and collectively maintain that the egregious injustices perpetrated against Black people--historical and current-did not arise nor will they cease overnight. We have been working to raise the visibility of the goal of health equity through numerous other means-- our training, research, and community outreach.

The University of Kentucky鈥擶ashington University Diabetes Research Center released a call for Collaborative Pilot & Feasibility Awards. Grants of up to $40,000 for one year will be awarded. Grants must be submitted to Dr. Philip Kern (philipkern@uky.edu) by 5pm on September 11, 2020. The anticipated funding start date is December 1, 2020.

On June 23rd from 11:30am-12:30pm Dr. Jennifer Gomez of Wayne State University will host a webinar, 鈥淎nti-Black Violence & The University: How Institutional Courage Can Pave The Way For True Equality in Academia鈥�

As the count went up, public health experts soon reported that a disproportionate number of the worst COVID-19 deaths were in the Black community. For example, Blacks make up 13 percent of the U.S. population and 23 percent of reported deaths.

We would like to congratulate our former graduate research assistant Myles Moody for earning his PhD in Sociology and accepting a tenure-track assistant professor appointment in the Sociology Department at the University of Alabama-Birmingham!

Several CHET representatives recently wrote an Op-Ed for the Lexington Herald Leader addressing the disproportionate burden of COVID-19 among the Black population in Lexington. The article, 鈥淩acism, injustice are 鈥榩re-existing conditions鈥� that lead to racial disparity in COVID-19 cases鈥� can be read online at https://www.kentucky.com/opinion/op-ed/article242404396.html and will be available in print Monday May 4th.
