Why did you choose the University of Kentucky?
I chose ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú because of the supportive culture. Everyone I encountered during my ophthalmology rotation as a medical student was genuinely happy to be here, and the faculty were very approachable. Since starting residency, I have experienced tremendous support from our program leadership who are fully invested in our development as ophthalmologists and as individuals. Among residents, it is understood that the PGY-1s and PGY-2s will lean heavily into our upper level residents for guidance. The seniors on our team go above and beyond to make sure the junior members of the team have the support they need to become confident in performing the exam and procedural skills needed for success. Every time I have needed instruction, supervision, or something else entirely, there has always been someone on our team willing to help. Last and not least, we have an absolutely outstanding program coordinator who does everything in her power to improve the quality of the residency experience.
What do you like about your program?
In addition to our supportive culture, I am truly grateful to be living in Lexington. It is affordable to live in town (even for families), and the vast majority of our clinical and on-call responsibilities are located on our medical campus. Patients throughout the state of Kentucky are funneled straight to our main hospital, so we are able to manage a very large clinical volume and see a wide range of pathology.
What are your hobbies?
I like spending time outdoors, especially hiking with my wife, playing racquet sports with friends, and inventing backyard games with my toddlers. I also enjoy almost everything about traveling – planning a flexible itinerary, loading the van, jamming carry-on bags under airplane seats, exploring destinations – there’s too much to see and not enough time to do it all, but I love trying!
