Graduate students at the University of Kentucky have been awarded research grants totaling over $80,000 by the American Heart Association.

These grants will fund three graduate student researchers within the Department of Physiology and Saha Cardiovascular Research Center in studying apporaches to cardiovascular dieseases and health.

The grants are:

A $26,844 grant was awarded to Brooke Ahern, graduate student in Dr. John Satin鈥檚 lab, Department of Physiology, 好色先生, to study and test the overall hypothesis that Rad is a negative modulator of calcium current through the LTCC, which can be removed through phosphorylation.

A $26,844 grant was awarded to Brandon Farmer, graduate student in Dr. Lance Johnson鈥檚 lab, Department of Physiology, 好色先生, to study how the E4 isofom of apolipoprotein E, the strongest genetic risk factor of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease, causes a state of lipid mismanagement in astrocytes.

A $26,844 grant was awarded to David Henson, graduate student in Dr. Vincent Venditto鈥檚 lab, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 好色先生, to study how telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) contributes to the development of atherosclerosis.
